Happy birthday to me

It was my birthday last week, which around here translates to a whole week of birthday celebrations. The best part of the festival of Tans was definitely Friday night when Hayley and Simon very generously looked after (sleeping) Evie and Ollie. Nick and I took off down the road to one of the locals for steak dinners and lots of vinos. It was totally awesome. Not so awesome the next morning though as we have been completely sober around here of late so it hurt a little more than usual.

Nursing my sore head we popped down the road to the farmer's market on saturday morning and I found the ultimate cure - yum cha - 8 dumplings washed down with raspberry lemonade. Perfection. Ollie steered clear of the yum cha and stuck to the super giant and delicious lamingtons they sell down there.

Later on in the day I had the pleasure of a one hour massage followed by spa and sauna at my fave spa place (a leftover baby shower pressie) which was absolute heaven. It was also the first time I had left Nick with both children for more than a very short amount of time. I needn't have worried though as not only did he manage to get them both to sleep, he also managed to whip up a birthday cake. Well played. I'll have to start skipping out on them more often now.

It hasn't been all yum cha and birthday cake around here this week though. Evie has been engaged in a bit of a sleep battle. Nights are still an absolute dream but she has been struggling to have her morning nap which she still desperately needs. This seems to be because we are often out and about at this time of day and there is just too much going on that she wants to check out. The other sleep battle we have been having is due to her rolling onto her tummy and not being able to roll back. Well this week she has figured out how to roll back so that has relieved some of the issue. But the other side of this is that she has finally worked out how to sleep on her tummy. This is totally terrifying but she seems to prefer it and appears to know to keep her face to the side so she can breathe. As a fellow tummy sleeper I can't really get too cranky about this but it still scares the bejaysus out of me when I go in to check on her and see the back of her head.

Before she completely figured out the tummy thing she got herself into a few funny positions. This one cracked me up the other day. Her legs were half in the air as well. And yes, she is sucking her thumb. Not ideal I know but it is too cute and I can't really stop her from doing it. I guess it will just be a battle down the track.

Another sleep photo. Evie comes into our bed every morning around 5 am. I didn't do this with Ollie but this little girl can get away with anything. Not that I'm complaining. I love these sleeping cuddles - except when she isn't that tired and instead hits and scratches (in the most loving manner) my face. Mind you, I am usually so tired that I continue to sleep through the assault anyway.

The noisy little lion (AKA Ollie) had an exciting milestone today. He went up to the big boy room at daycare today. We had been talking about it for a while and he seemed pretty excited about it but I won't know how well he went until this afternoon. His new teacher is a man who Ollie likes (as do we) so hopefully he might be the one to encourage Ol to use his listening ears a bit more. Fingers crossed!

And finally, another video so you can witness the cuteness in the flesh. This is Ollie cracking Evie up, then telling her to "Calm down Evie". Beyond gorgeous.

Food, friends and footy.

This week Ollie and I had a special visitor all the way from Cloncurry - our friend Jesse. Jesse came to play at Camp Ollie for a few hours while his mum had some very well deserved shopping time. Ollie and Jesse played lots of fun games like cups and Jesse was very helpful to me during the afternoon. Another exciting event this week was Nick and my third wedding anniversary. To celebrate we went to the lovely E'cco restaurant on Saturday night, thanks to Aunty Em who stayed over at our place to look after Ollie. Thankfully Ollie was on his best behaviour, as opposed to some of the other nights recently that have seen me popping into his room a number of times in the early hours of the morning. Ollie got to see his Aunty Em again the next day when we went over to the McNaughton/Dower home to celebrate Aunty Hayley's birthday and to catch up with Uncle Luke. Hayley cooked the wonderful family birthday tradition of Flat Meat (hard to describe but kind of like a thinner sc...

Movieworld!

I told you last week that we had been busy having lots of fun around here and another of our fun activities (this time while Nanna Freddy was here) was a trip to Movieworld. But as I'm currently heat pressing fifty odd t-shirts for this weekend's big market, I am only able to make it to the computer in 40 second stints.  It isn't that I'm worried about scorching the shirts, but the heat press has this dreadful tinky asian sounding song as the alarm on the timer and it really grates on my soul!  And as I'm sure you can agree that there isn't a whole lot I can write in the time it takes me to run between the computer and the press (this paragraph has taken me five t-shirts!), this blog is going to be mainly pictures. Ol loved the characters. But not as much as the rides.  He went on about 16.  Seriously. He wasn't a fan of the car driving ones as he just couldn't make them work properly.  His dodgem effort was basically just driving aro...

Cos we are living in a material world...

It has been a week of new purchases in the Dower household. As Ollie is nearing the six month mark when he will start eating solids (or mushies as they should really be called), we thought it was time to get ourselves a highchair. You'd be surprised at how many different kinds you can get and after lots of research I worked out exactly which one I wanted. So of course, that was the one that had just been discontinued!! Anyway, we bought a similar one and it got delivered to our house ... in pieces. I couldn't wait for Nick to come home to put it together so I gave it a crack and after managing to find a screwdriver (the most challenging part of the process) I successfully negotiated the instructions until the object before me resembled the one on the box. Ollie and I both held our breath the first time I put him in it, but it held his weight (not an insignificant amount). Ollie seems to like his highchair for reasonable periods of time and I have found it a godsend as it en...
