As a mum you can’t help but think your child is the smartest, most talented and beautiful being to ever walk the planet but this week provided me with one of those wonderful moments when I just felt so proud of OllieB. We were doing the grocery shopping when Ollie started making his new dog barking noise. I realised that we were in the pet food aisle and he was pointing at the packets of dog food. What a smart boy. But then when we got to the next aisle he started to make the sound again. Alas, we were standing next to toilet paper so I figured that it must have been a total fluke and my plans of him giving Doogie Howser a run for his money crumbled. Until … I noticed that he was pointing to the Kleenex packs with the labrador puppy on the front. What a smart boy!!!
As he starts to turn into a little boy he is becoming more independent with things like feeding himself. The process reminds me of one of those skill tester machines where the claw tries (but invariably fails) to grab at the prize. He is obviously getting a reasonable amount in though as he is a gorgeous chubby little bunny. But in the last few days he has started to hide his food down in his highchair underneath his right thigh. It is frustrating but so funny watching him squish up each piece and carefully put it down the side. I have to turn away from him so he can’t see me in fits of laughter. I do hope it is only a phase though.
Another phase is tantrum chucking. It isn’t to the throwing himself on supermarket floors and screaming bloody murder but we are definitely on our way. Basically if you take something off him that he wants he screams out and will put his head down on the ground. Speaking of putting his head down, he has also worked out that he likes looking at the world from upside down and does this cute little yoga-esque move that is kind of a cross between downward dog and a head stand. He thinks it is pretty cool.
And in some minor news, hardly really worth mentioning really, he has taken his first steps!!!!! It is not walking as such but he took two steps the other day between Nick and I. Very cool. He is also a dab hand at walking when we are holding his hands. The other day the three of us walked to the neighbour’s house two doors up with Ollie tottering on between us. I think he will be tearing around in no time.
We’d just been for our twelve month needles in this picture below, hence the cotton wool on his shoulders. Two in one arm and another in the other arm. He was okay with the first arm but I swear the last needle was longer than his little arm was wide. He cried, as did I, but we got through it. No more for another 6 months.
