When Nick and I found out we were having a little boy we bought this book on raising boys. It described the various phases of a boy's life and in one part talked about the change from a baby whose world is completely centred around their mummy to a little boy who is in complete awe of their daddy. Well, in recent weeks I have completely witnessed the beginning of this process.
While Ollie still thinks I'm a pretty big deal (as is evidenced by his desire for me to hold him and all 15ish kilos of him far too much, especially while declaring "cuddle"), he has made a real shift to becoming a daddy's boy. He is Nick's number one fan and is either playing games with him ("daddy sit here, play", "daddy play trains") or he is trying to copy Nick in some way. An obvious example of this has been Ollie's regular wearing of Mr Potato Head's glasses and pointing out that they are the same as daddy's. The other night saw the three of us all wearing our glasses - well Nick had his and Ollie and I both borrowed from Mr Potato Head (you can also see the remnants of my nice big puffy cheeks after my physically and fiscally painful visit to the dentist - double ouch).
Obear continues to sleep beautifully in his big boy bed. He has even calmed down a bit with his day naps and instead of it taking an hour of me putting him back into his bed it has evolved into him just happily rolling over and going to sleep while I read him a story. This is the case at nighttime as well and it is so lovely reading him stories while he shuts his eyes and dozes off that I have completely squeezed Nick out of bedtime lately because it is just too sweet to be the one who gets to tuck him in at night.
But don't worry, in keeping with Nick being Ollie's idol at the moment there is plenty of boy play in the evenings. Ollie is obsessed with his trains, matchbox cars and wooden blocks. Everything is a big boy game at the moment and when he isn't clutching at his cars (actually his two vans, forklift and ute - pronounced 'oot') he is using his pieces of fruit to make block like constructions and driving them around like cars. I'm not sure if it is nature or nurture but there is no doubting his boy-ness, not that we are discouraging it as we are both having the absolute best time playing along with him and all his super cool toys.
You can practically see the "brrm brrm" noises coming out of his mouth. Here are the two vans. Not the sleekest motoring examples but he thinks they are pretty awesome.
As for language skills of late, we are completely amazed by the things that are coming out of his mouth. The title of this blog refers to his latest statement when we are trying to clean his teeth. He insists on grabbing the brush and taking a crack at it himself while declaring "me do it". While his use of three and four word sentences is pretty cool, it is nothing compared to the joy we felt this week (twice) when he was cognisant of our visit to the hardware store - "Bunnings" and when playing with one of his favourite toys - "iPad". Mind you, his skills in flicking screens on the iPad are out of control. I suspect that it is a matter of weeks before he is able to program the DVD recorder!
