A new toy

In the eleven years Nick and I have been together he has often expressed his desire to have a skateboard.  And each time I have immediately told him that he could have one if he was willing to get a helmet, knee pads, elbow pads etc.  Needless to say this has been effective for an entire decade.  But recently in a moment of weakness (lack of sleep or alcohol - I can't recall which) I acquiesced.  Research was done, a purchase was made and you guessed it, he is now the new owner of a very shiny new skateboard.

I'm not sure quite how many gnarly rad airs he will be doing but if it makes him happy and relaxed to go for a scoot along the foreshore (with all the other teenagers) then who am I to deny him this?

Unsurprisingly, Ollie also took a shine to the new wheels.  I'm sure you can sense trouble nearing.  And it didn't take long.  The first morning, in the company of our lovely friends Cos & Kate, it somehow seemed like a good idea to let Ollie ride on the skateboard headfirst on his tummy down the hallway.  It doesn't take a genius to see where this is going...

And here is the evidence.  He hurtled straight into the coffee table, getting his poor little fingers stuck between the board and the table leg.  Ouch.  And what kind of a mother would take a photo of such a thing?  Or worse, put it on a blog???

But no harm no foul.  Ol's love for the skateboard continues as can be seen from this photo.  Although I should point out that the skateboard no longer resides inside and Ol will not be riding it again anytime soon.  Nick on the other hand...

On the same morning after recovering from his boo boo, we took a wander down to the markets with Cos & Kate and had ourselves a delicious breakfast at our favourite jellyfish cafe (although we may need to change our name for it since we haven't spied any jellyfish for quite some time).  Ol showed off his silky new bike riding skills.  He is really starting to get quite a bit of speed up on his little training wheels.  I have to near jog to keep up with him.

After breakfast #1 (and on our way to my breakfast #2 - dumplings from the markets!!!) Ol found the toddler boy holy grail.  An unattended fire truck.  Cue squealing and requests for photos.  Well that was just from me.  Thankfully Ollie complied.

That same afternoon we went to a birthday party at the local Hungry Jack's that Ollie had been invited to by a boy from daycare.  This is the first party Ol has been to that isn't the child of a friend.  So it is totally down to his friendship that he got invited.  I'm kind of proud about that.  As well as the fact that the birthday boy is in the next room up and someone Ol seems to look up to.  Nick, Evie and I just hung back with another set of parents and let the boys do their own thing, tearing around the playground making as much noise as possible interspersed with mouthfuls of junk food and ice-cream cake.  Basically the second holy grail of toddler boy.  Luckily these parties aren't designed to go all afternoon so once the polite threshold was crossed we were able to convince Ollie to leave (only once he got his party bag) and have ourselves some peace and quiet.  Talk about an exhausting experience.

Evie was around this week too!!  And she was definitely into everything.  Here she is clutching a wine glass (in true Pyke girl fashion) that she had been chasing around the floor.

Chewing on an ipod case under the dining table.

And clambering through Ollie's cardboard car while holding a pingpong bat.

She has also been causing mischief at nighttime.  Saturday night saw me sleeping beside her cot on the floor periodically patting and shooshing her and we have had a few other broken night's sleeps of late.  I suspect tooth number two is making an appearance.  At least I hope that is the reason.  She has been pretty cranky some days as well too.  But to her credit she is still incredibly adorable and gabbles and flaggles away to herself.  She has even started blowing the cutest little raspberries today.

A snatched moment to end the week.  Here is Ol at the library the other day.  We often go to storytime and Ol has to be right up the front so as not to miss a word.  He can be quite the little chatterbox though and I never know what embarrassing moments he will share with the whole audience.  This week we made it through unscathed but there was still no dancing from Obear.  He just stays there on his bum while the whole crowd around him do the hokey pokey.   But he is the first one up when it is time for craft.  I think he just likes to use the scissors.  I end up having to do the rest of it.  Mummy craft I call it. Nothing like juggling a baby on your hip, a scissor wielding toddler and trying to thread pipe cleaners through a cardboard clock.  Good times!

Food, friends and footy.

This week Ollie and I had a special visitor all the way from Cloncurry - our friend Jesse. Jesse came to play at Camp Ollie for a few hours while his mum had some very well deserved shopping time. Ollie and Jesse played lots of fun games like cups and Jesse was very helpful to me during the afternoon. Another exciting event this week was Nick and my third wedding anniversary. To celebrate we went to the lovely E'cco restaurant on Saturday night, thanks to Aunty Em who stayed over at our place to look after Ollie. Thankfully Ollie was on his best behaviour, as opposed to some of the other nights recently that have seen me popping into his room a number of times in the early hours of the morning. Ollie got to see his Aunty Em again the next day when we went over to the McNaughton/Dower home to celebrate Aunty Hayley's birthday and to catch up with Uncle Luke. Hayley cooked the wonderful family birthday tradition of Flat Meat (hard to describe but kind of like a thinner sc

Movieworld!

I told you last week that we had been busy having lots of fun around here and another of our fun activities (this time while Nanna Freddy was here) was a trip to Movieworld. But as I'm currently heat pressing fifty odd t-shirts for this weekend's big market, I am only able to make it to the computer in 40 second stints.  It isn't that I'm worried about scorching the shirts, but the heat press has this dreadful tinky asian sounding song as the alarm on the timer and it really grates on my soul!  And as I'm sure you can agree that there isn't a whole lot I can write in the time it takes me to run between the computer and the press (this paragraph has taken me five t-shirts!), this blog is going to be mainly pictures. Ol loved the characters. But not as much as the rides.  He went on about 16.  Seriously. He wasn't a fan of the car driving ones as he just couldn't make them work properly.  His dodgem effort was basically just driving aro

Eve is 11: the birthday blog

To my beautiful eleven year old daughter. Another year has flown by and you are another year older in the blink of an eye. Let me share some of the things I will always remember about you at this age. - You got a phone. Probably one of the biggest changes this year. Like all young people, you see it as an extension of your hand and you need to be reminded to get off it quite a lot. - You fronted up for another season of netball, despite your protestations. It is so lovely to see you out on the court supporting your team mates. - You are seriously addicted to Roblox. Like seriously! You could happily spend hours playing with your friends on there, or even side by side if you’re hanging out together. - You humour is wicked and sometimes savage. Your timing is ridiculously on point sometimes. - You’re not to old or too cool to play with your dolls. Sometimes they still get dusted off and dressed up. There have even been a few haircuts for some of them. - You love listening to audio stor
