This is my second mother’s day. Last year it was still such a novelty, having a four month old baby who, while he could smile and thrown in the occasional giggle, was just a floppy whingy little blob (who I loved more than any other floppy whingy little blob!).
My wish list to mark this occasion was a pair of slippers to keep my feet warm in our chilly little house and a thermos to take my Earl Grey to the park. Ollie (and Nick) filled those requirements but went above and beyond my expectations and got me a new Nintendo Ds – probably not the best way to encourage me to be a better mum by giving me a new gaming device. Ollie will have to put Pizza Hut on speed dial soon. But my absolute super favourite part of the day was Ollie running to me with his (crayon scribbled) card in his hands calling out “mummy”. Love. Love. Love.
But 365 days on from my first mother’s day and I feel like I have learned a lifetime. Here are a few of the pearls of wisdom that I’ve mastered. I’ve learned that:
- it isn’t nanna to keep a tissue tucked into your bra. It’s just plain practical.
- it is possible to drive along a freeway while rummaging though a nappy bag looking for snacks to placate the little dictator in the back demanding “more”!
- it isn’t gross to eat food that has been pre-chewed and then spat out – actually it really IS pretty disgusting.
- a toddler CAN actually get by with eating two peas and three pieces of carrot for dinner every now and again.
- I shouldn’t take it personally when I spend hours making a delicious dinner and it all ends up on the floor.
- sleep is an optional extra.
- spelling certain words like “BANANA” and “YO GABBA GABBA” avoid a super frenzied child.
- books actually get more interesting when you read them twenty times in a row.
- food tastes better when you have smeared it all over your face, in your hair, over the highchair and on the floor.
- Evil Gus generally let’s Ollie get away with pulling her tail. Generally.
- it’s perfectly normal to have to step over three plastic vehicles to get anywhere in the house.
- there is nothing in the world better than a big loving cuddle and sloppy kiss from a little Ollie bear after a day at work.
My life gets better and better because you are in it. O bear, I love you more than keyboards can type. I can’t wait for all the giggles and kisses that we will share until our next Mother’s day. Mwah.
And the rest of the week…
O Bear’s first kick of the Sherrin. Look at the skills on that kid.
Having fun with Aunty Hayley. Thanks for the SpiderMan cape – we are going to wear it EVERYWHERE this week.
Just for a quick reminder, here is Ollie B this time last year. Note the big drooly drooly trail. Such a floppy little B!
Happy Mother’s day to all the mums – especially Ollie’s nannas – Nanna Carmel, Nanna Kaye & Nanna Freddy.
