Three for the last time

In the last week around here there has been launched by me a "war on defiance". But, like the "war on terror" and "war on drugs" it seems that while there may be minor victories scored occasionally, there is never really going to be any true winner.

I think the reason I've been so caught up in trying to stamp out any dodgy behaviour is that I've been working toward this point for nine months now and was hoping that the arrival of the new baby would see us with a two and a half year old boy who went to sleep without any fuss, stayed in his bed all night without calling out to me (pat me mummy, read me a story without pictures mummy, there's a monster mummy) and recognised the importance of a day nap. And despite there being times over the past nine months when Ollie has been capable of all of these things, it seems that now is just not that time. There have been plenty of tears on both of our parts over the past week or so but I have now realised that it just isn't worth the hassle so I've decided to take a more laid back approach - not just to maintain my sanity, but also because I've worked out that I've got four nights in the hospital where Ollie's bedtime antics just aren't my problem!!!! I've never spent a night away from him so this will probably do us both good. Mind you, I will probably have my hands full with the new little sleep destroyer in this family.

Absolute lowlight of the week? We stupidly let Ollie eat a giant chocolate chip cookie with smarties on it. BIG MISTAKE! He doesn't eat huge amounts of sugar but we have noticed his behaviour after consuming it on previous occasions. But honestly, this must have been super duper strength over proof sugar. It was like the kid was on speed. He was totally spinning around, climbing things (practically the walls) and just carrying on in a way we had never ever seen before. He absolutely refused to sleep (not surprisingly) and even climbed out of the port a cot that Nick put him in so he might be convinced to nap. Thankfully the effects wore off after a few hours and eventually our sweet little boy was returned to normal. The only silver lining? He went to sleep that night with absolutely no fuss at all as the poor little bugger was so tired.

Here is evidence of the cookie being consumed:

Learning the art of dunking cookies in milk.

Definitely one satisfied little customer.

We should have known by the look on his face in this pic that there was just a tad too much sugar being consumed!!!

So this is my last blog as a mother of one. It is now only three more sleeps until we meet our newest family member. This is not yet terrifying me as much as it probably should. I think I'm fairly calm about it because I must have forgotten what a newborn was like. But I figure she can't cause too much hassle as she can't run away from me or talk back to me. And it is not like I haven't gotten used to extremely limited sleep over the past couple of years.

I'm sure it will still be a rude shock. But an absolutely wonderful one. Stay tuned for lots of photos of squishy newborn cheeks and chubby little thighs. It is definitely going to get a whole lot more fun around here!!

Food, friends and footy.

This week Ollie and I had a special visitor all the way from Cloncurry - our friend Jesse. Jesse came to play at Camp Ollie for a few hours while his mum had some very well deserved shopping time. Ollie and Jesse played lots of fun games like cups and Jesse was very helpful to me during the afternoon. Another exciting event this week was Nick and my third wedding anniversary. To celebrate we went to the lovely E'cco restaurant on Saturday night, thanks to Aunty Em who stayed over at our place to look after Ollie. Thankfully Ollie was on his best behaviour, as opposed to some of the other nights recently that have seen me popping into his room a number of times in the early hours of the morning. Ollie got to see his Aunty Em again the next day when we went over to the McNaughton/Dower home to celebrate Aunty Hayley's birthday and to catch up with Uncle Luke. Hayley cooked the wonderful family birthday tradition of Flat Meat (hard to describe but kind of like a thinner sc...

Movieworld!

I told you last week that we had been busy having lots of fun around here and another of our fun activities (this time while Nanna Freddy was here) was a trip to Movieworld. But as I'm currently heat pressing fifty odd t-shirts for this weekend's big market, I am only able to make it to the computer in 40 second stints.  It isn't that I'm worried about scorching the shirts, but the heat press has this dreadful tinky asian sounding song as the alarm on the timer and it really grates on my soul!  And as I'm sure you can agree that there isn't a whole lot I can write in the time it takes me to run between the computer and the press (this paragraph has taken me five t-shirts!), this blog is going to be mainly pictures. Ol loved the characters. But not as much as the rides.  He went on about 16.  Seriously. He wasn't a fan of the car driving ones as he just couldn't make them work properly.  His dodgem effort was basically just driving aro...

Cos we are living in a material world...

It has been a week of new purchases in the Dower household. As Ollie is nearing the six month mark when he will start eating solids (or mushies as they should really be called), we thought it was time to get ourselves a highchair. You'd be surprised at how many different kinds you can get and after lots of research I worked out exactly which one I wanted. So of course, that was the one that had just been discontinued!! Anyway, we bought a similar one and it got delivered to our house ... in pieces. I couldn't wait for Nick to come home to put it together so I gave it a crack and after managing to find a screwdriver (the most challenging part of the process) I successfully negotiated the instructions until the object before me resembled the one on the box. Ollie and I both held our breath the first time I put him in it, but it held his weight (not an insignificant amount). Ollie seems to like his highchair for reasonable periods of time and I have found it a godsend as it en...
