We have had so many occasions to sing the Geelong Cat's team song since Ollie was born that you would think he would know the words by heart now. And last Saturday we were lucky enough to get one more chance to sing it this season when the Cats thumped the feral Pies in the Grand Final. For anyone who doesn't follow AFL, Collingwood are the team that everyone despises (probably even the Pies fans themselves, if they have half a brain, which they probably don't). So the win was even sweeter. It was also especially sweet for Pa Chris, a lifelong diehard Cat's fan, to score three tickets to the final at the last minute from a very generous friend. Nick was extremely jealous indeed.
Now the AFL Grand Final is held on a Saturday afternoon, i.e. prime kidlet time, so we had to get a little creative about how we were going to wrangle the TV to ourselves and a bit of peace and quiet. The solution? A super awesome cubby house complete with its own LCD TV, Stanley the Dog, a big bowl of popcorn and Ollie's favourite movies. We made sure we lavished him with lots of attention during the breaks in the game but otherwise Ollie was pretty happy to hang out in his "cave". Everyone wins.
And the best part about winning the football? Both of my children were now born in Cat's Premiership winning years. How awesome is that?
The weekend also saw a visit from Aunty Alicia who was up from Sydney. Ollie was a little disappointed that Giant Uncle Guy couldn't make the trip but this was offset by a supporting cast of Grandpa Peter and our lovely friend Kellie and her two gorgeous girls Charlotte and Evie (possibly our Evie's namesake). We had a great time going to the park (despite the cyclonic weather conditions) followed by a delicious fish and chips feast. On Monday morning Alicia, Ollie, Evie and I all walked to the beach to build sandcastles and chase crabs followed by a very civilised cino. Although Ollie was disappointed to be going to the beach, he wanted to go to the dentist. Seriously. He is going tomorrow but keeps asking if he can go each day. He is super keen.

In other news, the great cloth nappy (and wipes) experiment continues to go well. In fact we have only ever bought about two packets of disposable nappies for Evie (packets, not boxes - and half of them are still unused). It does take a little bit of organisation remembering to put nappies on to wash each night but it has quickly become habit. The benefits of them can already be seen - obviously we haven't been forking out cash each week for disposables; Evie is lovely and rash free; our garbage bin has plenty of room in it each week for important things like wine bottles and most importantly of all, they just look lovely on her as well as hanging on the line in the breeze. As an added bonus they do an even better job of containing the poo-namis that are the trademark of newborns. In fact the only such leaks I have had was on the day I put her in disposables. Yuck.
"Once upon a time there was a beautiful Princess Evie who had a brother King Ollie. He read her stories. They all lived happily ever after". Short, but very very sweet!
Not so lovely? Some very dear friends of ours lost their beautiful baby boy this week. It is so terribly unfair that so many of our friends have experienced such incredible heartache on their journey toward becoming parents. Nick and I count ourselves so incredibly blessed to have two such beautiful children in our lives. When I hear of stories such as this one I feel compelled to cover my two lovely babies with as many kisses and cuddles as I can. We are just so lucky to have them.
